The Biggest and Best Bands from the 1960s
26th May 2017A few weeks ago, we spoke about the greatest musical artists from the 50s, so why not dedicate some posts to great bands and artists from other decades as well? This week, we wanted to pay tribute to the biggest and best bands from the 1960s, in no particular order:
Pink Floyd
It’s safe to say that Pink Floyd isn’t just one of the biggest and best bands from the 1960s, but one of the most influential bands of all time. The British band was formed back in 1965 by Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, Roger Waters, and Richard Wright, with David Gilmour joining later in 1967, and Barrett leaving the group in 1968. Their two best-selling albums were ‘The Dark Side of the Moon’ and ‘The Wall’. Click here to read about the infamous feud between Gilmour and Rogers.
The Beatles
This rock band formed in Liverpool back in 1960 with members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. They started out by doing small gigs in clubs and soon became one of the most influential bands of the rock era. Although initially a rock n’ roll band, The Beatles eventually started experimenting with other musical styles including psychedelia and pop ballads. Led Zeppelin
It was 1968 when this rock band formed in London, consisting of members Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, and John Bonham. Originally rooted in blues and psychedelia genres, their sound developed into a heavier one, leading to them being recognised as one of the originators of heavy metal. The tragic death of drummer Bonham led to an unfortunate break-up, but they eventually reunited, surprising and pleasing fans from all across the world. Read more about it here.
The Rolling Stones
Another London-formed rock band; The Rolling Stones kicked off their career in 1962, with the original band consisting of Brian Jones, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Bill Wyman, Charlie Watts, and Ian Stewart, although there were a number of changes in members throughout their years of success. This band also experimented with various music styles, but they were considered to be “The world’s greatest rock and roll band” for a long period of time – not to mention the fact that they’ve had a pop-culture magazine named after them.
The Beach Boys
The only American band mentioned in this week’s list; The Beach Boys formed in 1961 with members Brian, Dennis, and Carl Wilson, Mike Love, and Al Jardine. Their sound was a unique combination of jazz, rock and roll, and R&B, with hints of classical elements being introduced later on. Despite being relatives and friends, The Beach Boys also had their fair share of fall-outs, leading up to one big one which tore the group apart. Click here to read more about it.
Bee Gees
Last but not least, we’ve got the Bee Gees – the widely successful Australian pop group formed in 1958 by brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb. This trio sang their songs in recognisable three-part harmonies, with their combined vibrato and falsetto becoming their signature sound. Not only did the Bee Gees write their own songs, but they also wrote and produced several other major hits for different artists.
There’s our list of the 6 biggest and best bands from the 1960s, although it goes without saying that there are several others.
